24-Hour Monitoring, 15-Minute Response Saves Business Loss

Monitoring tools installed for the client reported an issue with data loading on New Year’s Day. Response time was around 15 minutes, and issue resolution occurred within 3 hours. We were able to diagnose the issue appropriately and return with a satisfactory solution that allowed the customer to quickly recover from a performance delay in their timeline for a critical data loading activity.

The client originally needed to update their vast SQL Server environment for better enterprise performance and compliance. Together, we created a long-term plan for ongoing maintenance and support to proactively secure the environment. This environment had previously been neglected for years and was becoming detrimental to their business. They previously had either zero (in some cases) or minimal monitoring & alerting tools and procedures in place, leaving no/poor visibility into their environment.

The monitoring tools and procedures that we installed allowed us to detect an issue immediately. With a 15-minute response time and despite it being New Year’s day, we then notified the client that we were working on the issue. We quickly gathered the performance data, identified the source of the issue, and worked toward a resolution.

The performance goal was to reduce the time of a query that was being repeated hundreds of times with a load time of ~7 seconds, to less than 1 second per execution.


SOLUTION

SRG implemented the proper tools (at no cost to the client) and created a comprehensive, scalable plan for long-term administration. This solution-based approach has dramatically improved the usability and functionality of their environment and provides a means for both proactive (scheduled, predictable, routine) and as-needed (Sev-1) support. The client can now focus on supporting their business users and not worry about the overall condition of the SQL environment.

The client was able to finish their data loading process on time, avoiding any impact to the business. The client received a detailed post-incident report of the issue that was found/in-question and the approaches to solve it.
